melitta epos review: a coffee maker you can rely on

words: matt leigh

For the coffee lovers that want a personal barista in their kitchen

i have been around a lot of coffee machines, especially as a former barista in a high street coffee shop. that said, i’ve also used plenty of them at home: pod, steam arm, you name it. so, if you’re after a reliable pour-over coffee maker, you might want to consider the melitta epos.

the first thing that stood out to me was the built-in grinder, which means you’ll have to get yourself a bag of coffee beans (although pre-ground coffee can work, too). i, for one, love the smell that fills up the room as you grind fresh beans in the morning, which is an inseparable part of the melitta epos experience – on top of that, the control it offers, including three coarseness options, helps you fine tune the grind to a setting that works best for the roast level of your coffee beans and the taste you’re looking for.

the next (and arguably main) selling point of the epos is the actual brewing of the coffee. considering ‘epos’ stands for electric pour over system, it does exactly what it says on the tin… or the box that it comes in; all you have to do is add water equivalent to the amount of coffee you’d like to make and let it do its thing.

the pre-brew function will get the ground coffee ready, which means you’ll get to sit back and watch this brewing expert work. the brewing arm has three holes that pour at different times – as the arm completes a 360° rotation, adapting to the direction and water flow of the brewing profile, it gives you an even pour. the entire process lasts less than a couple of minutes, with very little input needed. the result? a pot full of consistently well-brewed coffee to kickstart your day. speaking of which, thanks to the hot plate that the melitta epos comes with, your coffee will stay warm for up to fourty minutes – so, if you’re feeling generous in the morning, you can either make a few extra cups for the whole house to enjoy… or just have some more to yourself.

even though the taste of the coffee is of utmost importance, the looks do play a part, too. the minimalist design and sleek look of the epos machine makes it a versatile addition to your kitchen. the colour scheme, no matter whether you go with the gold or the silver option, works well with many interior design directions.

having used the melitta epos consistently for the last couple of weeks, i can say that it brings a personal touch to my mourning routine; the coffee is made exactly how i like it and it’s entirely up to me to change any part of the process according to my own preferences. it’s an excellent coffee marker that’ll be well received by not just coffee enthusiasts, but also those who claim they only ‘tolerate it’; it’s a work horse that pumps out what you ask for in exactly the same way time after time.
