it's high time katie schecter unlocked the gates to her cinematic universe
chic, transcendental, and serene. that’s exactly how nashville’s katie schecter finds herself in a sultry new single, ‘run river run’.
born out of the desire to defy the odds and exist freely, akin to a real river, schecter’s latest offering isn’t just a song; it’s a noir-infused manifesto (with eversweet hints of soft rock and classic jazz). it reminds the listener that victorious triumphs await them should they muster up the courage to bare their soul and cherish the imperfections within.
“it’s about bypassing self-doubt and the art of resilience, inspired by the master himself, Bruce Lee,” schecter says.
as revealed by the musician herself, ‘run river run’ is a celebration of “gracefully moving with and around life’s challenges rather than confronting them head on” and how many hurdles a person can overcome by simply “going with the flow.”
there are layers of undeniable brilliance in schecter’s artistry, and they’re all in the details: the elegiac lyricism, the enchanting vocals, and the escapist melodies. it’ll be interesting to hear what direction she takes next with her forthcoming album, empress (out on october 17th).
in celebration of her new single, the nashville-based musician has listed out the five things that inspire her the most… in her own words!
check ’em out below.
Babeslayer
VENUS DE MILO was a “push present” from my husband when I gave birth to my daughter.
She is a 1966 Danelectro, she’s a goddess of love, and she’s my go-to guitar.

legacy
I’ve been keeping moleskin journals since I was a teenager, so I’ve acquired stacks upon stacks.
They contain every song I’ve ever written and they live in a fireproof safe in our basement.
gospel
My friend Chelsea lends me books like it’s 1998, and this one has forever changed the way I see the world.
It should be required reading.

Right hand, man
My drawings are how I voice the things I can’t say in song form.
I’m addicted to making them and hope to have a proper show someday.
OG Baddies
this vinyl compilation is one of my favorite records; gosh, it’s so great.
I’m amazed by these women for doing what they loved despite being socially unacceptable – I think about their courage and skills every time I spin it.
