ormella's latest single marks a turning point in her artistic journey

you might think of august as a month filled with serotonin, laughter, and an insatiable appetite for adventure. it’s when most of us try to make up for the good times we were promised but somehow haven’t had the pleasure of experiencing yet. partially due to the naivety that the sunny season will last forever, partially due to the fact that it’s human nature to long for something you can’t have, or define.

for some, august is a transitional period. a slow march towards autumn, where not only do they flourish but also find a sense of familiarity within that longing.

rising folk storyteller ormella is one of those people. her brand-new single, ‘sunrise’, is an intricate telling of the singer’s journey towards freedom: freedom from heartache, freedom from longing, and freedom to exist in her own right without fearing the aftermath.

ormella’s lyricism is simply unmatched. her way with words is that of a poet’s, not just a songwriter’s. wrapped up in tender, resonant vocals, they echo stories that cut deep – she’s got the rare ability to make emotion flow purposely, almost as if she cast a spell over you and commanded the intensity in.

the revolving dance between midnight and sunrise holds great significance within various stories, and rightfully so.

when the world falls to sleep at dusk, we’re often left contemplating if our actions stem from ambition, or angst. you could almost say that a person is at their most authentic self then – until exhaustion turns those thoughts into delirious notions and midnight, once again, becomes inseparable from longing. longing for the sun to rise and set the tone for a new day.

it seems that ormella has tapped into the magic of this unique phenomenon, which is exactly what makes ‘sunrise’ such a captivating piece of work.

the question remains, though – is longing a feeling that should be accepted as comfort, or something that should be feared until it eventually fades away at the crack of dawn?

it’ll be interesting to hear ormella’s answer in her upcoming ep, between the devil & the deep blue sea, out on october 10th.

‘sunrise’ by ormella is out now.
